Malayabanta festival shows confluence of various tribal cultures
Malkangiri (Orissa), Nov. 16: A three-day tribal cultural festival named “Malyabanta Mahotsav” enabled 35 troupes from across Orissa and other States to present their respective cultural heritage sharing a common stage here earlier this week.
“Malyabanta Mahotsav” showcased the amalgamation of various culture and traditions via various tribal dance forms from different parts of the country and Orissa.
Held under the auspices of the Government of Orissa in Malkangiri District, the colourful and lively festival was a joint initiative of District Council of Culture and the District administration.
"Every group of tribals in Malkangiri has different customs and traditions, with dance and song occupying a separate place in their hearts. Hence, this festival is organised to bring forward their cultures and folklores", said Manish Verma, the District Collector of Malkangiri in Orissa.
Malkangiri District is the hub of many tribes like Bonda, Koya, Gidai, Pravta and Bhumia, perhaps was found to be an apt place to stage this convergence of tribal culture.
Troupes belonging to States like Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Assam and others participated in the festival with great zeal and earned appreciation for their captivating performances.
"The artistes have come from different parts of the State and neighbouring States as well. We came to know about them and about their culture", said Minati, a participant in the festival.
Earlier, the curtain-raiser to the festival was provided by a “Kalash Yatra” in which holy water brought from the rivers of Saptdhara, Satkunda, Saveri and Chitrakonda reservoir was brought to Malkangiri Jagannath Temple.
“Kalash Yatra” later reached the Malyabanta Mandap in a colourful procession amidst drum beating, Bulubuli and assorted other instruments. Besides, the members of the Koya and Bonda tribes performed lively dances.
“Malyabanta Mandap”, the venue of the Mahotsav, witnessed an overwhelming response from the locals as well as other visitors and tourists during the three day celebrations.
The objective of organising “Malyabanta Mahotsav” has been to project the cultural heritage of the tribal. The festival concluded on Monday (Nov. 13). (ANI)
