Jammu, July 29 : Jammu continued to observe a shutdown for the sixth consecutive day on Tuesday, even as the authorities lifted curfew.

All shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed and traffic was off the roads.

The capital had been reeling placed under curfew following violent protests over the revocation of forestland transfer order to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board.

Divisional Commissioner S. Pandey said: "Curfew has been lifted from the entire city. No part of the Jammu zone is under restrictions now. We hope that the situation stays normal. The police would be present in adequate strength in sensitive places. We don''t want any untoward incident."

However, the Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti has agreed to have a dialogue with the government.

The convener of the AYSS, Leela Karan Sharma, said: "Let there be a proper invite from the government in black and white as to what are they offering. Then, we would be willing to sit across the table."

The shutdown comes in the wake of the Amarnath Samiti’s demand for the allocation of 40 hectares of forestland to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board.

The State Government on July 1 had withdrawn its May 26 order to allocate 40 hectare of land to the shrine board following massive street protests against the order. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had to resign over the issue following his Government’s failure to win a trust vote in the State Assembly. (ANI)
