Jammu, July 28 : Despite curfew, people in Jammu continued to protest against the cancellation of land allotted to Amarnath shrine board in Kashmir on the fourth consecutive day.

Irate protesters on Monday pelted stones and burnt a police vehicle demanding the recall of the state Governor who assumed office recently and transfer of forestland to Amarnath shrine trust in the Muslim-majority part of Kashmir.

The agitation is being spearheaded by Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti and is supported by about 30 organisations in the region.

Police resorted to baton charge and tear gas to control the mob that pelted stones at the security personnel. The mob retaliated by lobbying firecrackers on the streets.

Several people including policemen have been injured in the violence that is continuing from last three days.

The fresh spell of violence flared up in Jammu region following suicide by a youth with the authorities imposing indefinite curfew that was lifted on Friday.

But apprehending violence re-clamped it on Saturday to foil the rally of Sangarsh Samiti at Parade Ground on Sunday morning to pay tributes to the youth who committed suicide.

The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samiti leaders defied curfew and took out processions from different parts of Jammu towards Parade Ground before they were detained.

Curfew continued on Monday in old city as well as some other trouble-torn parts while the remaining parts of the city observed a shutdown.

The Jammu and Kashmir government was on July first forced to back down on its decision to transfer 100 acres of forest land in Kashmir to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), following widespread protests in the predominantly Muslim Kashmir valley.
