Ten injured in separate incidents of clashes in Jammu

Jammu, July 2 : A day after the curfew was imposed in Jammu, ten people were injured in separate incidents of clashes with the police in Jammu while protesting against the revocation of the transfer of forest land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board.

The police fired in the air in Muthi area after baton charge failed to disperse protesters who defied the curfew orders.

Protestors from Muthi, Purkhoo and Naurkhoo areas in Jammu, held rallies and blocked Jammu-Poonch and Jammu-Srinagar highways and demanded action against policemen involved in Tuesday's firing in which three persons were seriously wounded.

Seven people were injured as demonstrators clashed with police in the three areas where traffic was badly disrupted. The agitators also marched to the residence of Congress Member of Parliament Madan Lal Sharma and staged a demonstration.

They burnt effigies of Governor N. N. Vohra, Chief Minister Gulam Nabi Azad and People’s Democratic Party patron Mufti Sayeed.

In a separate incident, three people were injured when police cane-charged a group of protesters who tried to march to the house of Congress Member of Legislative Assembly Girdari Lal in Kuthua District of Jammu.

The protesters demanded imposition of the earlier orders of transfer of 39.88 hectare of land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board for providing necessary facilities to the pilgrims for their pilgrimage.

They also demanded the resignation of Governor N. N. Vohra for his decision to surrender the land transferred to the board.

The Shri Amarnath Shrine Board on Sunday gave up its claim on the 39.88 hectares of forest land after an assurance from Jammu and Kashmir government that it was capable of providing all facilities to pilgrims going to the shrine. (ANI)
