NIO ET7’s 150-kWh semi solid-state battery promises 648-mile range
Shanghai-headquartered NIO Incorporated, the trailblazer in the realm of electric vehicles (EVs), recently showcased the real-world prowess of its revolutionary 150-kWh Ultra Long-Range battery. In a monumental feat, a Nio ET7 electric sedan equipped with a cutting-edge 150-kWh Ultra Long-Range semi-solid-state battery embarked on a 648-mile (roughly 1,044 km) journey across China on a single charge. Driven by the brand’s visionary founder and chief executive William Li, alongside Senior Vice President of Nio Power, Dr. Fei Shen, the ET7 accomplished the given extraordinary journey in just around 14 hours (12.5 hours excluding breaks), utilizing an impressive 97 per cent of the battery’s power.
Noteworthy is the fact that the EV’s average energy consumption stood at a remarkable 212.4 watt-hour per mile (13.2 kWh/100 km) during the trip, with a surprising 92 per cent of the distance covered in NOP+ (Navigate-on-Pilot) semi-autonomous mode.
What sets this achievement apart is the fact that the ET7 covered the distance from Shanghai to Xiamen with a notable 3 per cent of battery life remaining. In other words, there was no need for a battery swap or recharge during the whole journey. This accomplishment seems to be even greater when we consider the cold temperatures ranging from 28.4°F to 10.4°F (-2°C to -12°C) that prevailed during the trip, with the cabin temperature steadfast at a comfortable 68°F (20°C).
The average speed of the vehicle was 52.13 miles per hour (roughly 83.9 kilometers per hour), which showcases not only the efficiency of the EV but also the reliability of the cutting-edge battery technology. Achieving an outstanding 648 miles on a single charge in challenging cold weather conditions, which traditionally pose challenges to EV battery performance, underscores the Nio ET7’s exceptional engineering.
William Li, Chairman of Nio, expressed his enthusiasm, stating that the successful conclusion of this range test signifies the expansion of smart EVs’ range beyond 1,000 km. This achievement is expected to play a crucial role in advancing the automotive industry's transition from gasoline consumption to electricity.
Speaking on the topic, Li said, “The completion of this range test marks the range of smart EVs going beyond 1,000 kilometers, which will further promote the transformation of the automotive industry from the consumption of gasoline to electricity."
The Nio ET7's groundbreaking achievement centers on its 150-kWh Ultra Long-Range battery pack, the world’s first pouch format cell CTP Pack with a thermal propagation-free design. With an impressive energy density of up to 360 Wh per kilogram, this battery sets a new standard for efficiency and performance.
