Scientists have warned that if the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts, 90,000 people could be killed and the molten ash will spew 1,000 miles from the park itself. In addition, the eruption in America will lead to a 'volcanic winter' dropping the temperature drastically.

Scientists said that the volcano at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and Montana is present atop a huge reserve of molten rock and the last eruption has taken place 640,000 years ago. As per experts, there is one in 700,000 annual chance of volcanic eruption at the site. Therefore, there are very less chances of such type of eruption.

Due to ash in the air, the air travel will be stopped. There are also chances that the 'volcanic winter' could blanket much of the United States and other nations.

"Sulfuric gases released from the volcano would spring into the atmosphere and mix with the planet's water vapor. The haze of gas that could drape the country wouldn't just dim the sunlight - it also would cool temperatures", affirmed scientists.

As per the National Geographic, the last three supervolcano eruptions on earth have taken place at Yellowstone. The most recent one as stated over had taken place 640,000 years ago and was a thousand times the size of the Mount St. Helens eruption that took place in 1980 and took lives of 57 people in Washington.
