A 12-foot long minke whale was found dead on a Long Island Beach, said officials. The whale was found on Wednesday night at Robert Moses State Park. Experts have started investigation into the case to find the reason behind death of the minke whale.

Rob DiGiovanni of the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation said in a statement that the whale was an adult male and appeared to be about 3 years old.

The whale appeared to have shark bites, but he said those might have happened after it died. A necropsy is being performed to determine the cause of death.

DiGiovanni said a humpback and a True's beaked whale have also washed up on Long Island beaches in recent weeks. It is the sixth whale to have washed up on the beach in past few months from Coney Island to Westhampton.

"We received a call from New York State parks last night that the animal was in the surf. We have some predation. It looks like some shark bites on the animal. Whether that was pre or post mortem before or after death. It's a little difficult for us to look at right now", said DiGiovanni.

Marine biologists so far have not considered the situation as alarming, but Rob DiGiovanni said they still want to know what exactly is going on.

He said in a statement that a similar situation occurred in 2001, where a similar amount of animals washed up in similar time, but the situation improved later.
