Astronomers observe Mysterious and Dusty A1689-zD1 Galaxy
Astronomers observed extremely far objects in the space to look back into ancient times. A photo of the sun from earth could show how the sun was about eight minutes ago as it takes about eight minutes to reach the light from the sun to earth. An observation of galaxy situated at a distance of billions of light years tells how the galaxy was about billions of years ago.
Astronomers observed galaxy A1689-zD1 as the light that the galaxy emits bent by a huge galaxy cluster Abell 1689 in the constellation Virgo nearly 2.2 billion light years away. According to astronomers, the galaxy formed an equivalent of 12 solar mass worth of new stars per year. The most surprising thing for astronomers was the dust that A1689-zD1 had.
According to authors of the new study, the dust-to-gas ratio of galaxy A1689-zD1 is closer to the ratio of earth's Milky Way galaxy. Darach Watson, a researcher from the University of Copenhagen, said the exact origin of galactic dust is still unclear, but the study indicated that its production had occurred very rapidly. As per Watson, the production could be within just 500 million years of the beginning of star formation in the Universe.
Kirsten Knudsen, a researcher from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, said, "This amazingly dusty galaxy seems to have been in a rush to make its first generations of stars. In the future, ALMA will be able to help us to find more galaxies like this, and learn just what makes them so keen to grow up".
As the light from the distant body travelled towards earth, expansion of the universe stretched the wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation to lower frequencies. As per the reports, Hubble Space Telescope and ALMA had imaged the distance, but still astronomers do not have information about the composition of dusty galaxy.
