Sahara Group approaches Supreme Court against Roy's detention
India's Sahara Group has approached the Supreme Court of India against the detention of its head, Subrata Roy's in Delhi's Tihar jail for a week.
The group has described his detention as illegal and has demanded his immediate release. Sahara's counsel moved a habeas corpus petition before a bench led by Chief Justice P Sathasivam. It said that arrest is illegal and beyond the scope of law. Mr. Roy has been in jail since March 4 after a two-judge bench rejected the group's proposal on refunding investors. The apex court had described the company's proposal as "dishonourable".
The Supreme Court on Friday criticised the company for making it assemble a special bench and called it an insult. It criticised the Sahara group and its chief Subrata Roy for not coming out with a proper proposal. The court has asked the company to prepare an "honourable" plan to refund Rs 20,000 crore of investor's money.
The Supreme Court bench has agreed to hear the plea at 2 pm today. The apex court had ordered that Subrata Roy will remain in Tihar jail till next Tuesday. The group had said that it is ready to make a cash payment of Rs. 2,500 crore within three days and also gave commitment that it will pay the rest of Rs. 14,900 crore in five instalments by July, 2015.
