Jayalalithaa described Prabhakaran's son's killing as “War Crime”
J Jayalalithaa, the chief minister of the southern state of Tamil Nadu has described the killing of the son of late Tamil Tigers' chief Velupillai Prabhakaran, as a `war crime'.
While speaking to the media, she said that the killing of Balachandran (Prabhakaran) was a war crime and she urged the Indian government to work with the US in the UN to pass a resolution denouncing rights violations by the authorities in neighbouring Sri Lanka.
"I call upon the Indian government to hold discussions with the US and other like-minded nations and prepare a resolution to be passed by the UN," she said.
Her remarks came a day after some media outlets published a picture of Balachandran in a Lankan military bunker. It is alleged that he was killed at close range and this has attracted criticism from several sections. The authorities in the island nation have responded by saying that Prabhakaran's son was killed in crossfire with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
She also cited a resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu assembly and urged the Indian government to impose a economic embargo on Sri Lanka in accordance with other nations. She said that the embargo must be in place until the displaced mails in the country are allowed to return to their homes and live with equal rights.
