Solar power crucial for meeting carbon reduction targets, UK
The UK government has said that the solar power is important for helping the county meet its carbon-reduction targets during the coming years.
The government has added solar photovoltaic power n the list of nine technologies that are crucial in meeting the climate related targets set by the country. The list of technologies also includes renewable energy sources like marine and offshore wind energy.
The UK government is aiming to reduce its emissions by 34 percent in 2020 from 1990. The country has also made a commitment to a goal set by the European Union to get 15 of its energy requirement from renewable sources by 2020.
In an update to its Renewable Energy Roadmap, the Department of Energy and Climate Change noted that the country's solar capacity increased by more than five times to 1.4 gigawatts in the year till June after the cost of solar energy fell by 250 per cent. Total electricity output from renewables rose 27 percent in the period, it said.
Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey said in the statement that, "Renewable energy is increasingly powering the U. K.'s grid, and the economy too. I am determined that we get ahead in the global race on renewables and build on the big- money investments we've seen."
Meanwhile, the Department of Energy and Climate Change had recently said that the cost of renewable energy such as solar and wind will come up to 7.6 billion pounds by 2020.
