Greggs planning to open average of two shops a week

GreggsBritain’s biggest bakery retailer, Greggs has said that it is planning to open an average of two shops a week for the rest of eh year.

The company opened a total of 70 shops this year and is on course to achieve opening of 100 new stores within this year. The company also said that it will open a new savouries bakery in order to cater to the growing demand.

Greggs is planning to invest between £30 million and £35 million during the coming two years to build its new facility. The Newcastle-based company had opened a £16.5m bakery in Longbenton, Newcastle and it is now looking for a site in the south to open a new unit.

Greggs chief executive Ken McMeikan said, “We have shops, wholesaling and franchises across the whole of the UK and we need to double the capacity we have now. We remain committed to the North East. Greggs is an iconic North East business, we are very proud of our roots and the supply chain is managed from the North East. But we’ve got to have the right capacity and logistically.”

McMeikan pointed out that the comoany is aiming to expand to new avenues including supplying to British Forces servicemen and women overseas through the NAAFI.
