CAG is not a “munimji”, says SCIndia's apex court, the Supreme Court of India has said that the comptroller and auditor general (CAG) is not just a "Munimji" of the government.

The court threw out a petition challenging the CAG's authority to probe and conduct audits of the controversial allocation of coal blocks by the UPA government. The PIL was filed by counsel Santosh Paul on the behalf of petitioner, Arvind Gupta.

A bench comprising justices R M Lodha and A R Dave sad that the CAG is not just an accountant and it a constitutional authority, which has the authority to review and conduct performance audit on revenue allocations of the government of union territories, states and the centre.

The ruling also said that its CAG's responsibility to give recommendations and provide findings but it is up to the parliament to accept those recommendations or not.

"The CAG is not a munim. He is a constitutional authority who can examine the revenue allocation and matters relating to the economy," the bench ruled.

The court also said that CAG; s role is not just to maintain balance sheets of the governmental authorities and if it exceeds its authority then the parliament has the right to make corrections.
