Secretary Locke concludes his six-day India trip in Mumbai
US Commerce secretary Gary Locke, is on his six day trip to India and during his last day on Friday, he said that headlines you read today need not necessarily be the issues of tomorrow.
Locke met the city’s Dabbawala Association at Churchgate station on Friday and shares their trade secrets. Dabbawala’s in Mumbai have to deliver tiffins to their two lakh clients. After the meeting, Association president Raghunath Medge presented a shawl and white Gandhi topi to Locke. Locke accepted the gift and wears the topi while posing photographs.
Locke concluded that visit was a great success and around 24 American companies had participated in the trade mission visiting New Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai. US government’s role is to facilitate match-making.
Transco, an Illinois-based company, which retrofits and improves nuclear facilities, met the officials from the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited, while laser equipment company Enlight Technology from Vancouver had held meetings with Indian automobile companies. Both the companies have signed the deals but Locke refuses to disclose the specifications of the deal.
Locke mentioned some hurdles that are bigger stumbling blocks for American companies to do business in India; are unpredictability, lack of transparency in tender processes, limitations on foreign direct investment (FDI) in financial services, insurance sector and defense services.
