Dell To Roll Out Low-Cost Computers In India By Next Month
In order to continue accelerating sales growth, Dell Inc has decided to roll out a new variety of low-cost notebook computers in the Indian market.
The world’s No 2 PC manufacturer will sell the cheaper PCs through Texas-based company, Round Rock by mid-April, said Rajan Anandan, vice president of Dell India.
However, Mr. Anandan did not disclose the price or other details.
Last month, Steve Felice, Asia president, “Higher wages in India, where salaries are set to rise at the fastest pace in the world this year, may help Dell boost sales as computers become affordable to more consumers. Dell's revenue from India may climb to almost $1 billion in the year ending February.”
“Sales in India rose 60% last year to $700 million, Anandan said on Monday. Dell's sales of PCs in India gained 80% in the fourth quarter ended February 1,” he said.
Dell, which runs a factory in India’s southern province of Tamil Nadu, has decided to increase its computer-manufacturing capacity there from the existing annual capacity of four-lakh units.
The computer maker has no plans to sell its back-office operations in India, he said.
Ganesh Lakshminarayanan, MD of Dell International Services, said, “Dell plans to hire 1,000 people for its back-office operations within three months.”
He also said that the Indian PC sales grew 11% to 3.28 million units during the six months ended September 30.
Mr. Anandan also said the company was looking at setting up its retail operations in tie-up with some big retailers in India to sell its range of products.
