Toyota halts production temporarily at two US plants
Troubled Japanese auto maker Toyota Motor Corp. unveiled its plans to temporarily suspend production at two of its assembly plants in the US. The company wants to adjust the level of inventories in the wake of its biggest recall ever.
While operations would be suspended in the company's truck plant in San Antonio, the plant in Georgetown would have one non-production day, the company said on Tuesday. Toyota, has already halted sales of sight different models in the US, also said that it's also mulling over adding three more non-production days at its Kentucky plant in March and April.
Known for its safety features, the automaker has already recalled over six million vehicles over the last five months. Moreover, the company expects to see a drop in sales of nearly 80,000 units in its North American sales.
Commenting on the decision, a Toyota spokesperson said that the company could not allow inventories to build up to a very high level.
Meanwhile, close to 80 per cent of the vehicles halted from sale are again up for sale after the company repaired the defective accelerator pedals.
