Robben knee injury blow for Bayern

Arjen-RobbenMunich - Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben is to undergo knee surgery which will sideline him for several weeks, the club said Thursday.

Robben twisted his knee in Wednesday's Champions League goalless draw against Juventus.

A scan has shown an irritation of the plica tissue in the knee joint, the club said.

Robben, who arrived from Real Madrid shortly before the end of August, will undergo surgery later Thursday or Friday and is expected to be out of action for three or four weeks.

The injury is not as bad as first feared after Robben was forced to leave the pitch shortly before half-time.

"The cartilage and ligaments are OK," coach Louis van Gaal said. "We are fortunate also that we have a break next week for internationals."

Midfielder Franck Ribery could also be missing for Bayern's home game against Cologne on Saturday after problems again with a knee tendon.

Defender Daniel van Buyten is also a doubt after missing training Thursday with a bruised foot. (dpa)
