Mohali Airport to provide economic booster to Punjab
Punjab, the food bowl of the country, is heading towards becoming one of the prominent tourist and business destinations in South Asia with increase in aviation services. The government's move to allow international flights from Mohali Airport, domestic flights from Sahnewal airport (Ludhiana); and revamp Guru Ramdas International Airport at Amritsar by 2010, will give economic boost to the northern region.
Sukbir Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister Punjab, hailed the signing of JV for Mohali Airport, which is expected to be operational by December this year. Badal, in an official statement, said that Mohali Airport, having both national and international terminals and cargo hub, will boost trade and commerce activities in the northern region, increasing economic activities in Punjab and neighboring states.
All major roads reaching to the airport will be made six-lane; besides providing connectivity from Sector 20 of Panchkula through Zirakpur, under the alignments approved by the GMADA executive committee. Efforts are being made for naming the airport after the prominent freedom fighter, Bhagat Singh, after getting nod from GAMADA, HUDA and AAI.
