Hamburg  - Rafael Nadal retained first place in the men's tennis rankings despite his early shock exit at the French Open, but history-making Roger Federer drew closer.

Nadal, who crashed in the fourth round in Paris after winning there the past four years, has 13,140 points. Federer follows on 11,070 points after becoming only the sixth man to win all four majors with his Roland Garros title on Sunday.

The second Grand Slam of the year brought no major changes at the top, but semi-finalist Fernando Gonzalez returned into the top 10 in 10th place. Robin Soderling, the man who beat Nadal in the fourth round and lost the final against Federer, is now 12th.
