Sensex Maintains 11K; Ends 75.69 Pts UpBombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex, on Friday, opened strongly at 11,068, up 121 points, on account of the positive signals bobbing out of the foreign markets.

The index, thereafter, firmed up and reached to a high of 11,339, which was about 400 points up from its last closure.

But, heavy profit booking during the final hour of trading erased the big part of gains registered earlier in the day and fell below 11,000 mark and also hit an intra-day low of 10,946.25.

The Sensex however got well and finally closed the week after making a gain of 75.69 points at 11,023.09.

On the other hand, the broad-based NSE Nifty surged 14.90 points to close the week at 3,384.40 after touching an intra-day high of 3,489.85 and an intra-day low of 3,359.25.

The overall breadth of the market was positive as it saw 1,362 advancements as against 1,194 declinations.

Amongst the sectoral indices, the BSE Realty index gained over 3%, Bankex, IT, Capital goods rallied more than 2% each, and Power was up by 1.01%.

The Metal index, however, slipped 1.66%.

BSE Midcap and Smallcap index also closed the day on a positive note, and surged 0.98% and 0.57% respectively.

The top Sensex gainers included Larsen & Toubro, which surged 4.21%, Infosys Technologies climbed 3.86%, State Bank Of India zoomed 3.54%, ICICI Bank increased 3.53%, Reliance Energy went up 2.30% and Housing Development Finance Corporation remained up by 2.25%.
 
Losers comprised Hindalco Industries, which lost 5.18%, Tata Steel dropped 4.03%, Sterlite Industries (India) declined 3.12%, Tata Motors fell 2.86%, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries dipped 2.48% and ITC diminished 1.93%.

In overseas market, Asian stocks moved up, as earnings reports from Toshiba and JPMorgan Chase & Co. brought up confidence the worldwide recession is easing.

Nikkei gained 152.32 points to end at 8,907.58; Hang Seng index surged 18.28 points at 15,601.27; and Shanghai Composite fell 30.20 points at 2,503.94.

FTSE 100 rose 34.09% at 4,087.07; CAC 40 climbed 43.28 points to trade at 3,081.46; and DAX increased by 46.13 points to trade at 4,655.59. (4.20 p.m., IST)
