Radio journalist wounded in attack in southern Philippines
Zamboanga City, Philippines - A broadcast journalist was wounded in an attack by unidentified gunmen in a southern Philippine city, a police report said Friday.
Nilo Libares had just left the compound of Radio Agong dxCC in Cagayan de Oro City, 810 kilometres south of Manila, on Thursday afternoon when two gunmen fired at him.
Colleagues immediately rushed the victim to a nearby hospital.
Rey Bayoging, a colleague, said Libares is a hard-hitting commentator and often criticized illegal cockfighting and other forms of illegal gambling in the city.
The shooting of Libares was the latest in unabated attacks against journalists in the Philippines.
Two journalists have already been killed in the country since the start of the year.
In 2008, seven journalists were killed, four journalists were killed the previous year. In 2006, 13 journalists were killed. Most of the killings remained unresolved. (dpa)
