West Bengal Soon To Have Country’s Second NSG Hub
National Security Guard (NSG) Chief J.K. Dutt on Friday met with State Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee to discuss the plan for a proposed hub of the NSG in the state.
Later speaking on this with the media persons, Dutt said, “The NSG's eastern India hub will come up in West Bengal. We are looking for land and the state government is cooperating with us.”
However, the NSG Chief declined to give any other details of the meeting.
“Nothing has been finalised yet, so there is no point in discussing it with the media. I will be having another meeting with Sen on Feb 25. Hopefully, I will be in a position to talk after that,” said Dutt.
It is learnt that Dutt has asked the state government for 1,200-1,400 acres of land for the NSG hub and a comparatively smaller land near the city airport for the anti-hijack squad.
The government has so far proposed land at three positions: near Kalaikunda Air Force Station in West Midnapore district, at Barrackpore town in North 24 Parganas district and at Kaikhali near the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. All these three places are equipped with defence airbases.
Due to a lot of criticism directed at the Government of India for their soft response towards terrorism, and the time taken for the NSG commandos to arrive at Mumbai from their base in Manesar, Haryana in the wake of terrorist attacks on Mumbai on 26th November 2008, the Government of India has decided to set up units of NSG in various cities of the country.
