Curfew was imposed in six different places in Agra after the violence in the city which left one person dead and 50 injured. The clash between the police and the protestors occurred after a truck killed four persons attending a Muslim religious ceremony in the city. The incident took place around 4 in the morning on Wednesday, when a speeding truck ran over four men participating in the Shab-e-Baraat on MG Road. The truck driver fled from the scene. Member of Parliament from Agra city, Mr. Raj Babbar has blamed the police and administration for the violence. In his statement, Mr. Babbar said, “There was not enough police deployed at the procession and the police were very slow to react once the deaths occurred. I tried to call up Chief Minister Mayawati at 7 am in the morning but she was not available. If she had called up a few officers at that time and asked them to act, things would have been different.”
Taj Mahal was closed by the authorities following the violence. The monument is among the Seven Wonders of the World and attracts nearly 20,000 visitors every day.
Schools and colleges in the city have been closed for three days as the situation was tense in various parts of the city.
The situation seems to be in control as per the official statement of Police officials. The forces have been deployed in various parts of the city to keep the situation under control. The administration has promised the protestors that all necessary actions will be taken. The police department is already searching for the driver and a FIR has been registered.
