No Bollywood Segment In IFFI 2007; NCP, BJP Boycotted The Festival

FICCI 2007Panaji: International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2007 does not include more of Bollywood, except Chief Guest Shah Rukh Khan and a couple of Hindi movies.

Unlike in IFFI 2006, which had Hindi blockbusters such as ‘Lage Raho Munnbhai’, ‘Krish’ and ‘Rang De Basanti,’ Bollywood is absent from the festival.

Earlier, regional filmmakers had criticized the IFFI 2006 for being too much ‘Bollywood centric.’

Federation of India Secretary Suparn Sen said, “We will try and organize the segment next year as this year were informed about it a little too late.”

Sen added, “The organisers were not too keen on segregating Indian Cinema into Bollywood and non-Bollywood. Nor were they keen on tagging Bollywood cinema as mainstream.”

The DFF also said films to be screened at the festival need subtitles and few Bollywood producers willing to provide them.

Meanwhile, Goa’s two main political parties, BJP and NCP, decided to boycott all functions related to the ongoing IFFI 2007.

BJP has made issue of special economic zones (SEZs) in the state, and NCP is upset over party functionaries not being invited for inaugural ceremony of IFFI 2007.

“We had asked Nandini Paliwal (chief Executive Officer, Entertainment Society of Goa organising IFFI 2007) why NCP functionaries were not invited for the inaugural, but she pointed fingers towards Chief Minister Digamber Kamat and Directorate of Film Festival (DFF),” NCP’s Goa spokesman Surendra Furtado said.

“If they don't care for us then we too have decided not to attend any function related to IFFI 2007 even if they invite us during the remaining days,” he said.

BJP Goa unit spokesman Govind Parvatkar said, “Why should we participate in the festival organized by the state government which is not concerned about common people?”

BJP has been protesting against the state government for promoting SEZs.
