News regarding upcoming ice age doubtful

According to experts, the news that has been spread on the internet regarding the upcoming ice age in the next 15 years is doubtful information. Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter were flooded by such discussions by Sunday evening.

The news story was published on the websites such as UPI, The Daily Mail and The Huffington Post. The websites referred to the research done by ValentinaZharkova, who is a professor from National Astronomy Meeting in Wales.

According to her, the Sun's activity would be reduced by 60% in 2030. According to Zharkova, "We found magnetic wave components appearing in pairs; originating in two different layers in the Sun's interior. They both have a frequency of approximately 11 years, although this frequency is slightly different [for both] and they are offset in time". And this leads to high activity.

According to news reports, lower activity of the Sun could lead to exceedingly cold temperature on Earth. The Maunder Minimum phenomenon that occurred in 1645, when fall in temperature was experienced by North America and Europe, was cited in the study.

On July 2, Zharkova's research was presented to The Royal Astronomical Society. However, Zharkova also pointed out that her research does not refer to anything concerning the effect of lower level of solar activity on the Earth's climate. She also said that she didn't use the phrase "mini ice age".

According to her, the findings have not been yet published in a peer-reviewed journal, therefore the findings of the study are not verified.
