Newly Proposed State Bill Would Limit Purchase of Viagra

South Carolina state Rep. Mia McLeod, a Democrat from Columbia, recently proposed a new bill according to which males who want to buy Viagra will need to go through the same complicated procedures that women have to during an abortion.

McLeod said she is not confident about the bill being passed; she said her motive is just to broaden the discussion on the reproductive rights for women.

McLeod who is a lawyer and a public relations specialist by profession, in a statement to media soon after she introduced the bill, said that the purpose of this new bill was to awaken a male dominant legislature to give some more importance to women who have to undergo an extensive evaluation process while seeking abortion services.

If the proposed bill gets approval, a man who wishes to buy Viagra or any other drug prescribed for erectile dysfunction will have to pass through following processes: Firstly, he has to wait for around 24 hours before the processing of the applications begins. Secondly, the men will also require submitting an affidavit from one of their sexual partners that they have been showing symptoms of erectile dysfunction since past three months. Thirdly, the applicant will have to be examined by a sex therapist to ascertain the presence of erectile dysfunction. Fourthly, the men will also have to attend outpatient counseling within six months.

South Carolina is one of the several states that have been investigating Planned Parenthood and pressing for increased limits on women looking for abortion.
