A new kind of sign
Traditional mangalsutras are slowly being replaced by shorter lightweight versions
Working women are opting for shorter mangalsutras over the longer, more traditional variety. With several companies adhering to strict dress codes, it’s not always a viable option for women to wear long, heavy gold and black bead mangalsutras to the office.
Cashing in on the trend, several jewellery stores across the city have designed short, trendy mangalsutras to cater to the needs of these women.
Pratap Kamath, CEO, Abharan Jewels says, “Over the years, we’ve witnessed a great demand not just for shorter mangalsutras but also mangalsutras with precious stones including emeralds and rubies.” He goes on to add that there’s a huge demand for mangalsutras with diamond pendants.
Lightweight mangalsutras are now being included as part of the trousseau according to Pratap, “While women don’t want to deviate from the custom of wearing the mangalsutra, they don’t want to wear long, heavy ones either,” he says.
“And the advent of Hindi soaps have also contributed towards their popularity,” he quips.
While that’s one of the reasons behind an increasing number of brides-to-be opting for these trendy mangalsutras, it’s not the only one, “I spend a lot of time traveling, to and from work, so safety is one of my primary concerns. Besides, these mangalsutras can be teamed with any outfit,” concludes Meera Sankriti, an H R professional.
