National Park Service postpones closing of Jack's Boathouse
The National Park Service has said the it ha decided to delay the closing of Jack's Boathouse, which is a landmark canoe rental service along the Georgetown Waterfront.
The service decided to delay the closing after it received emails from those concerned with the closing of the landmark. Most of the property that is located about 100 feet west of the Key Bridge on Water Street NW in Georgetown is owned by the Park Service.
"I can assure all those concerned that the boat house operation will continue into the future as it is an important public service," National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis said in a statement.
Simkin, who owns a small piece of land in the area, was informed by the Park Service that his lease was being terminated and that he had to vacate the property by 31 January,
2013.
Jarvis also said that the staff at the park as well as at the regional office has been ordered to hold proceedings on the termination of the lease until he conducts a review and determines the best coerces of action on the matter.
Meanwhile, Simkin said that he is touched by people taking out time in the holiday season to send emails to save the Jacks from eviction. It employs 27 employees, many of whom are young college students. Supporters have created a Facebook page and an online petition to stop the termination of the lease.
Jack's Boathouse has been open since 1945, but it's located on land owned by the NPS.
