NASA’s Documentary Celebrates 50 Years of Spacewalk
NASA celebrated 50 glorious years of chivalrous spacewalks and applauded the valiant astronauts in a half-hour NASA documentary ‘Suit Up - 50 Years of Spacewalks’ that artistically presents the history of extravehicular activity (EVA).
The documentary unfurls the space endeavors from 1965 onwards when the first two space walks were undertaken by a Russian Alexey Leonov in March and an American Edward White in June.
The 30-minute documentary, narrated by actor and fan of space exploration, Jon Cryer features some vintage space footage that revisits the numerous spacewalks like the Hubble repair missions or the Bruce McCandless’ brave attempt at testing of NASA's version of a jetpack and the adventures of the ‘Manned Maneuvering Unit’.
‘Suit Up’ features interviews of Charles Bolden, NASA’s Administrator and astronaut and Dava Newman who is NASA’s spacesuit designer.
The documentary is also replete with interviews with astronauts, engineers, technicians, managers and several such people who played a part in spacewalk history. The space enthusiasts share a wide range of experiences ranging from personal stories to spacewalking experiences to space suit manufacturing. They also discuss the spacewalks aboard the International Space Station and the perils associated with space adventures.
The documentary, optimistically look forward to a bright future in space travel where we can devise novel ways to handle spacewalks as we get further and further from Earth.
A part of ‘Suit Up’ is specifically dedicated to Luca Parmitano, an Italian astronaut whose helmet was filled with water during an EVA in 2013 and he had to blindly ‘make his way back by memory’!
