Multiplexes Says ‘No’ To ‘Tashan’

The viewers’ are once again ready to see the Bollywood’s hottest and Tashanperfect couple together on big screen in Yash Chopra’s latest flick Tashan, released on Friday (April 25).

One of the year’s most-awaited releases, Tashan has aroused interest through their lavish promos and red-hot music months in advance of its opening.

But a roadblock hit Tashan’s success path hard, as it faces a complete blackout from India's multiplex companies.

The multiplexes rejected the much-hyped movie because of high revenue demand by Yash Raj Films’. Yash Chopra demanded 50% (45 per cent in Mumbai and Delhi) of ticket sales in the first and second weeks of release as his share.

The blackout could result in a loss of Rs 15-20 crore for Chopra’s production house.

Sanjeev Kohli, CEO of Yash Raj Films said, “We had asked Inox, Fame and Adlabs multiplexes to give 60 per cent of the revenue collected in the first week. 'Tashan' is a film that will easily earn enough revenues for the multiplexes and us. I don't think the increase in revenue percentage is too high.”

Amitabh Vardhan, CEO, PVR Cinemas, said, “As of now we don't have the film. As far as the revenue sharing in concerned, I would not like to comment on that.”

Arijit Dutta, a Kolkata-based exhibitor-distributor, is more forthright.

“I don't understand why we have to pay higher revenue when the business in Kolkata is 10 times less than other metros. This year revenue has been hiked by 12 percent here, whereas Mumbai and Delhi multiplexes were asked to pay only two percent more,” Mr. Dutta said.

None of the parties had reached any agreement till Friday morning. The film has opened in only single screen theatres.

Even the multiplexes didn’t accept Anees Bazme’s ‘Welcome’ at the time of its release. The film was screened only the day after, due to the same revenue sharing problem. Other films to get affected were Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par and Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodhaa Akbar.
