McDonald’s planning to open vegetarian outlets in India
American fast-food chain, McDonalds has said that it is planning to open launch another vegetarian outlet at Katra near the Vaishno Devi cave shrine in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The company already has a vegetarian outlet in Amrisar in Punjab, which is among the holiest places for Sikhs. The Vaishno Devi cave shrine is a revered Hindu pilgrimage site and it attracts hundreds of thousands of worshipers each year, who make their way from different parts of the country and abroad.
The company will consider opening more vegetarian outlets across the country. The outlet's menu in the country is already half filled with vegetarian offerings. It offers only chicken in non vegetarian items in India, taking religious sensitivities into consideration. The McAloo Tikki burger at 28 rupees is the most popular and alone accounts for a quarter of total sales.
"In markets across the world, McDonald's respects local cultures and has adopted our menu and dining experience to local preferences. The new restaurants in pilgrimage areas will be vegetarian-only because of the specific area and customer base," a McDonald's spokeswoman said in a statement.
