Kuala Lumpur  - Malaysian police fired tear gas into a group of hundreds of Iranians who gathered Monday outside a United Nations building to protest Iran's recent election results.

The group of some 700 people, made up mostly of foreign students, handed over a memorandum protesting alleged fraud in Iran's presidential election, which Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won by a margin of almost 30 per cent.

After handing in the memorandum, the protestors gathered outside the UN building in the capital Kuala Lumpur and sang the Iranian national anthem.

Police said they were forced to fire nine rounds of tear gas at the swelling crowd after the demonstrators refused to leave the premises, the Star online news portal reported.

The report said the protestors then dispersed, leaving police to sort out a massive traffic jam caused by the hour-long demonstration.(dpa)
