Lithuanian President denounces Russian missile plan

Lithuania Vilnius - Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus described Russia's plans to deploy missiles in its Kaliningrad enclave as "beyond comprehension" Wednesday.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said earlier in the day that Russia would deploy short-range Iskander missiles in its Baltic Sea enclave, which borders Lithuania, in answer to US plans to site a missile defence system in Eastern Europe.

"Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev is difficult to understand as his words are mutually conflicting. ... He talks about the commitment to act together against our common threats but sends missiles to Kaliningrad to neutralize the anti-missile defence system," said Adamkus.

Adamkus added that the US anti-missile defense system is not targeted against Russia.

"The question is whom the Russian President is acting against? One thing is certain: Missiles in Kaliningrad will surely not add to the fight against terrorism," Adamkus said. (dpa)
