League-best Lakers run past Mavericks

Los Angeles  - For nearly two-and-a-half quarters, the Los Angeles Lakers couldn't stop the Dallas Mavericks, until finally figuring it out.

Kobe Bryant scored a season-high 35 points, and the Lakers went on a decisive 17-0 run, bridging the third and fourth quarters en route to their sixth straight victory, 114-107 over the visiting Mavericks on Friday night.

"Tonight was a game where it didn't seem like anything was going our way," said Bryant, who had 23 second-half points. "But we made adjustments and we were able to battle through."

Derek Fisher had 19 points, Andrew Bynum contributed 18 with 10 rebounds while backup forward Trevor Aria added all 15 of his points in the second half as the Lakers improved to an NBA-best 13-1 record - their fastest start since a 16-1 mark in the 2001-02 title season.

"In the first half, we couldn't figure them out. I don't know because they run the same play over and over," Bynum said.

"But we were able to have a nice defensive stand in the last six minutes of the third quarter and took it into the fourth quarter that enabled us to win."

The Lakers trailed 69-57, but closed the third quarter on a 23-9 run, including 13 consecutive points to end the period to take an 80-78 advantage.

Baskets by Bynum, Ariza and Lamar Odom to start the fourth quarter, made it a 17-0 burst, that opened up an 84-78 advantage with 9.5 minutes left in the game.

"They attacked us with high screen and rolls, we couldn't stop the penetration," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "We just had to bring the intensity up a lot more. Until that moment when we broke the game open, we were on our heels most of the time."

After Bryant's two free throws made it 106-95, Jason Terry scored eight straight points, including consecutive three-pointers, pulling the Mavericks within 110-105 with 55 ticks to go.

However, Bryant made two free throws and hit an 18-foot jumper to seal the come-from behind home win.

Terry scored 29 points off the bench, while German wunderkind Dirk Nowitzki finished with 19 and 12 rebounds for Dallas( 7-8) which had won its last five games.
