Kolkata man carves architectural splendours from wood

Kolkata, Sep 19 : A man from Kolkata has a fiery passion for woodcraft, and has carved several miniature replicas, which include the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Big Ben of London and the famous Howrah Bridge.

Amit Todi, a businessman who started carving replicas two-years ago, spends hours of his free-time carving pieces of wood, creating architectural splendours.

Over time, what started as a project has turned into Amit's hobby.

I had to make a model of my factory. So I met a person in Singapore who makes such models. But he quoted the price of making model at Rs. 100,000," said Amit.

At this moment, Amit recalled his childhood days when he specialised in woodcraft.

I purchased all the accessories from Singapore and made model of my factory on my own," said Amit.

And since then Amit has not looked back.

Although, Amit has never been to any of the buildings that he recreates, but relies on their photographs collected from various sources.

Mukta Todi, Amit's wife said: "We find out as many photographs as possible of the structures taken from different angles from Internet. We also take out all the information."

The latest structure carved by Amit is the Chrysler Building of New York, which is the world's tallest brick building.

Amit's latest wooden replica has as many as 3000 windows, keeping as close as possible to the original 1,046 feet and 4.5 inch (319 metres) high building. (With inputs from ANI)
