JSW Steel To Set Up Port In Orissa At Rs 2000 Cr Investment
Sajjan Jindal-controlled the JSW Steel group plans to invest Rs 2000 crore in four years to setup a deep sea port in the Bhadrak district of Orissa, which is located right outside the border of West Bengal.
The proposed port in Orissa, which would handle coal and finished steel products, have an initial capacity of 25-30 million tones. The company would take 3-4 years to execute the project.
The port would also support import of raw materials and export of finished goods of the 10 million steel plants in West Bengal and Jharkhand.
The port will be built by the group's unlisted firm, JSW Infrastructure and Logistics Ltd.
The company’s earlier plan was to participate in Bengal's proposed deep sea port project, for which Digha in East Medinipur of West Bengal had been identified but latter it was reported that the area was prone to cyclones.
For the upcoming steel plant in West Bengal, the company had already entered into long-term contracts for iron ore mines in Orissa and Jharkhand, which estimated to cost between Rs 1500 – 2000 crore.
The plant, which expected to be completed by 2011-12, would be funded by equity of Rs 5000 crore and debt of Rs 1000.
In the first phase, the plant would have an initial capacity of three million tonnes a year, which would be increased to 10 million tones after completion of second phase.
