Jordanian soldier reburied in his village 40 years after his death
Amman - A Jordanian soldier whose fate remained unknown since he was killed in the six-day war with Israel in 1967 was laid to rest Wednesday at his village of Yubla, 70 kilometres North of Amman, in a full military funeral.
The remains of the soldier, identified as Mahmoud Mohammad Hkoum, were discovered recently in the East Jerusalem suburb of Anata and handed over to the Jordanian army.
The authorities conducted a DNA test on the remains to prove the identity of the soldier who belonged to the Jordanian garrison defending East Jerusalem, which was then part of the Hashemite Kingdom before Israel seized the holy city.
The soldier was reportedly wounded in the fighting with Israeli troops and took refuge in the village of Anata for therapy, but died there and his death was kept secret by people of the village until they disclosed his story a few weeks ago. (dpa)
