J&K moving towards peace
Recent statistics by the Jammu and Kashmir police offers a hope of peace in Jammu and Kashmir in future. These statistics reveal that there was a drop of 40 percent in terrorism-related incidents as compared to last year.
The number of militancy-related incidents has come down below four-digits ~ just around 700 this year; this was lowest number in 20-year-long history of terrorism.
Civilian casualties were 89, this number is lower than number of civilian deaths in any previous year.
The Director-General of Police, Mr. Kuldeep Khoda said that statistics also reveal that for the first time, the number of terrorists operating in the state has fallen below 1000. In Jammu and Kashmir, an estimated 808 terrorists, including 577 home-grown militants and 231 foreign mercenaries are currently operating. He added that 2008 also witnessed the lowest number of political killings. Only three political leaders were assassinated this year, compared to 101 in 2002 and nine in 2007.
In another first in a long time, no complaint of "custodial disappearance" was reported. There were only 85 casualties of security forces, including police personnel.
