Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams Temporarily Closing its 20 Stores around US

According to Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, the company is recalling all its products as sample of ice cream tested positive for the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.

Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams is also temporarily shutting down its 20 stores around the US. According to the company, it will not start sales again until all products are ensured to be completely safe. The Nebraska Department of Agriculture has conducted the test. During the test the experts found contamination.

Up to now, no reports are there of anyone becoming sick from Jeni's products. Customers are advised to either throw away products that are purchased or take them back to the store where they were bought for a refund.

According to experts, bacteria can cause potentially fatal infections, with symptoms involving high fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea and severe headache. The recalled products involve ice cream, frozen yogurt, sorbet, and ice cream sandwiches.

“We have decided to recall everything currently on retailer shelves, and we are closing our scoop shops until we are 100 percent confident every item we sell is safe”, said Chief Executive John Lowe.

The news came three days after Blue Bell Creameries recalled all of its ice cream and frozen treat products because of continuing problems with Listeria. According to Lowe, Jeni's was working with suppliers in order to find out if the bacteria was introduced by a product the company uses.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Listeria monocytogenes are organisms that lead to serious infection and can be fatal for newborns, elderly people and those with weak immune systems. There is a possibility that healthy people could suffer short-term symptoms like high fever, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
