Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin opens its doors to reporters
Blue Origin is a space technology and travel company promoted by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, and on Tuesday, the company opened its doors to reporters for the first time ever. Bezos welcomed everybody at Blue Origin, and at the same time thanked them for taking out time and paying a visit.
Blue Origin marks shift of space business from NASA and aerospace behemoths such as Lockheed Martin in the direction of private industry, mainly smaller entrepreneurial companies.
Founded by another Internet entrepreneur, Elon Musk, Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX has been the most popular and successful one among the new generation of rocket and space technology companies.
Last Friday, the company launched one more satellite to orbit, however, its aim to land the booster on a floating platform ended up in an explosion again.
Mr. Bezos hardly talks to the press, but recently he took 11 reporters on a roughly four-hours-long tour of the factory and answered their queries over lunch.
In the company’s central area, he explained a picture on a wall, showing two tortoises with an hourglass and looking up at a stylized picture of the planets and cosmos. Under it, there was written the motto of Blue Origin: ‘Gradatim ferociter’, which means ‘step by step, ferociously’ in English, with no cutting of corners, and no dillydallying. Mr. Bezos added that you can take the steps at a fast pace but can’t afford to miss one.
Bezos also provided updates on progress for his space tourism plans. He said that the reusable New Shepard spacecraft that was launched in November to the outskirts of space, and then made a comeback trip in January is up for a launch very soon.
