Jayalalithaa threatens to challenge dual diesel policy in SC
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has severely criticized the central government's new dual diesel pricing policy for bulk consumers and has threatened to move Supreme Court if the policy is not withdrawn by the government.
She said that the dual pricing policy is "short sighted" and "ill-conceived". In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, she noted that the dual pricing policy includes several short-sighted measures that are expected to affect bulk consumers like state transportation corporations in the country. She said that the hike of Rs 11 per litre for bulk consumers will lead to a loss of Rs 1,000 crore for the state transport undertakings.
"Considering people's welfare, the Government will bear the additional financial burden on account of the increase," she said. Her comments indicates that bus fares are not likely to be raised soon and the government might have to shoulder the hike in diesel prices if the central government does not roll back the new dual pricing policy.
Jayalalithaa said that the totally inflationary, discriminatory and anti-poor policy must be withdrawn by the government. She accused the Ups government of only doing a lip service to protecting the common man while taking policy steps that affects the people in the country.
