It has been reported that Japan is claiming that it has created a laser, which is the most powerful so far. As per reports, with the help of a device known as the Laser for Fast Ignition Experiment (LFEX), scientists in Osaka were able to generate a 2-petawatt laser beam.

According to scientists, the power of the beam is comparable with 1,000 times the total electricity consumption in the world.

It generated a large amount of power, however the energy needed for the beam itself is comparable with that used in a microwave for two seconds. The team produced this high output from low energy by firing the laser beam for a trillionth of a second.

In order to increase the beam's power, strategically placed glass panels were supplied with energy along the 328ft -long LFEX device. As per scientists, these glass lamps focused the beam to increase its energy as it moved across.

According to the institute's Junji Kawanaka, an associate professor of electrical engineering at the university, "With heated competition in the world to improve the performance of lasers, our goal now is to increase our output to 10 petawatts".

According to Popular Science, a 50,000 watt laser was able to take down a drone only a mile away. The 50kW laser was reported to be 10 billion times less powerful than the laser used in Japan. So far, a 1-pettawatt laser that was created by the University of Texas, Austin, is the only laser the world ever observed.
