Indian IT firms issue advisories to employees working in Sandy-hit areas
Indian IT have shut their offices situated in the hurricane Sandy-hit areas in the US, and have issued advisories to their employees working in the affected areas, advising them to stay indoors.
Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc along the US' East Coast, forcing tech firms to close offices in a number of areas including New York, New Jersey, Boston and Connecticut as a precautionary measure.
Bangalore-based Infosys said in a statement, "We have been in touch with our employees and their families to ensure they have requisite information on what to do in case of an emergency. Additionally, we are restricting business travel to the region for the next few days."
Infosys has seventeen offices in the US, which support around 15,000 direct jobs in the country.
Indian IT firms like Infosys, Wipro, HCL Technologies and TCS have also announced that they have strong business contingency plans that would ensure no disruptions to their businesses.
According to industry body NASSCOM, Indian IT firms and business process outsourcing services support around 280,000 jobs in the US. North American market accounts for nearly 62 per cent of total revenue generated by Indian technology firms.
Two days back, Sandy hit the US' East Coast with violent winds and intense rains. According to emerging reports, the hurricane killed at least 33 people, and caused an estimated damage of between $10 billion and $20 billion.
