India, Chile ink agreements to strengthen ties New Delhi - Chile on Tuesday underscored its solidarity with India against the backdrop of the Mumbai terrorist attacks as the two countries decided to expand economic ties and signed four pacts including an agreement on peaceful uses of outer space.

"Chile strongly condemned the terrorist attacks on Mumbai on November 26, 2008. Chile voiced the hope that the intellectual and actual perpetrators would be identified soon and brought to justice," said a joint statement following talks between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chilean President Michelle Bachelet in New Delhi.

More than 170 people, 26 of them foreign nationals, were killed in the attacks blamed on the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba terror group.

Both Singh and Bachelet called for enhanced exchange of information to combat terrorism and urged the "early conclusion" of the United Nation's Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism.

A memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of new and renewable energy was signed between Chile's National Energy Commission and India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

Furthermore, a pact on cooperation in the field of education and an agreement on joint exploration in uses of outer space for peaceful purposes were also signed on Tuesday.

Another pact on cooperation in the field of geology and mineral resources was also signed between the two sides.

The two leaders stressed on the importance of enhancing trade and economic relations and decided to double bilateral trade in the next five years from the current level of over 2.3 billion dollars.

Besides inking measures to deepen the existing Preferential Trade agreement, India and Chile also agreed to increase periodic exchanges of business missions and participation in each other's trade fairs to facilitate promotion of their products and services.

Bachelet, the first woman president of Chile is also due to visit India's financial capital Mumbai and southern metropolis of Chennai. She arrived in India for her five-day visit on Monday. (dpa)
