Increasing CO2 Levels in Atmosphere to make carbon Dating unreliable
Researchers have raised concerns by affirming that rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere will make carbon dating unreliably. Carbon dating is an important technique being used by many scientists and industries.
Radiocarbon dating can be used from analyzing archaeological finds, detecting fraudulent works of art, identifying illegal ivory trading and evaluating the regeneration of brain cells in neurological patients.
The researchers have stated that the technique is in risk, but things can be improved if fossil fuel emission levels can be reduced. Fossils fuels do not have carbon-14 and owing to it, when it mixes with the atmosphere then it confuses the naturally-occurring element.
Study researchers said that when the sun's rays interact with nitrogen in the atmosphere, the carbon 14 is formed. The isotope is absorbed by plants and then by herbivores, omnivores and carnivores through food chains.
Once the organisms absorbing carbon-14 is dead then it starts decaying. Researchers come to know about how long a plant, animal or omnivores and carnivores have been dead. Researcher Heather Graven of Imperial College London said, "If we did any current measurements on new products, they will end up having the same fraction of radiocarbon to total carbon as something that's lost it over time due to decay".
Researchers said that scientists have few other options and it is not the end of dating, but soon could be the end of carbon dating.
