“I Can See Some Parallels With My Life and Aaja Nachle’s Dia,” Says Madhuri Dixit
Mumbai: The Bollywood diva, Madhuri Dixit has returned to big silver screen with “Aaja Nachle” after a gap of six years. The movie hits Indian cinemas today (November 30).
In an interview with Madhuri, why she chose Aaja Nachle as her comeback film, she said, “the script”. She quitted Bollywood six years ago to get married- now lives in the US - says she can identify with the character she’s playing.
“Dia lives abroad for many years and then returns home to India and sees how we are moving away from our culture…” So, though an American accent is now firmly in place, Dixit says it’s important not to forget where you come from, “though you must imbibe the best traits of other cultures”.
In the movie, Dia lives abroad for 10-15 years and then comes back to India because her guru calls her back. She, a passionate dancer, has to complete a mission. Ultimately, the spirit triumphs — it shows how we are moving away from our culture and an effort by Dia and her mates to do something about it.
“We have put our best foot forward — we have tried to make a good product, now we just hope the audience likes it,” she added.
Talking about her role in movie, Madhuri said, “I can see some parallels with my life and Dia’s — I can identify with her. It’s all right to imbibe new cultures but it’s imperative not to forget your identity. Everything’s changing so fast here, culturally.”
When asked - how difficult was it to come back to Bollywood and work with two young boys? Madhuri laughs, “Well, I couldn’t have done it without everyone’s support — my family, mother-in-law, husband, kids and the wonderful support system I had, that’s for sure.”
The Bollywood diva, said, “Bollywood has changed a lot with the corporate world stepping in. There’s a lot more discipline, finances flow, films get completed in a shorter span — earlier, we would sometimes be in a film for five years or so — the post-production.”
Meanwhile, A-list Bollywood designer Manish Malhotra is floored after designing for Madhuri’s Aaja Nachle.
Manish’s personal favorite for Madhuri is “the black and blue ghagra because she has lost a lot of weight and I think the colour black is making her look even more slimmer and yes, the black ghane bal (thick hair) is also looking lovely.”
“I think she has not lost out on all that energy and excitement that she used to have on the film sets. She is still the same, some stars always remain stars. They never change,” he added.
