Hyundai i10 electric variant launched by Brand ambassador SRK

HyundaiBollywood actor Shahrukh Khan, the brand ambassador of Hyundai Motors, unveiled the electric version of the company's i10 at the 2010 Auto Expo in Delhi on Wednesday.

To power the front wheels of new i10 electric, the car has a 49kW (66.6 PS) electric motor under its hood and is fitted with a 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

"We are going to present to you certain innovations, technologies and other stuff that of course Hyundai is famous for all across the world and has brought to India. I was very nostalgic coming to Pragati Maidan, my childhood was spent here in Pragati Maidan, my father used to have a small shop there," said Khan at the show in the capital.

He also unveiled two other models for the company, Genesis Coupe and the i-mode. Hyundai Motor Co has 16 percent of the market share in the rapidly growing Indian small car segment and is better placed with its popularity and wide network to compete in the market which is getting tougher with the entry of many automakers in the segment.

The company’s i10 model even though costs more than the its flagship model Santro sells 12,000 units per month against Santro’s 7,000 .The popularity of i10 model inspired i10 electric, according to the firms marketing and sales director Arvind Saxena. Giving no other details he said "These cars will ensure zero-carbon emissions and help address the concerns of environmentalists."

With a full five hour recharge, the car can run for 160 km.

"We have today spread over 260 cities, and have 286 dealers and 80 sales branches. We plan to expand to 320 cities and 1,340 branches this year.” added Saxena.

As against the slump in many develop countries, car sales in India are to rise 16 per cent this year to 1.4 million vehicles. This increase is a result of economic revival and government incentives. The variety of new model launches at the Expo has many industry experts believe that Delhi Auto Expo could gain much higher significance in the international market rivaling or even surpassing the Detroit auto show.
