Heavy-hearted Jazz earn emotional victory for late owner Miller
Los Angeles - The Utah Jazz played with a heavy heart, then took the court and showed the love for its late owner Larry H. Miller.
Mehmet Okur scored 25 points, Deron Williams had 20 with 13 assists, leading the Jazz to its fourth consecutive win, a highly- emotional 102-88 victory over the New Orleans Hornets on Saturday night.
"This was an emotional game tonight," Williams said. "We just wanted to win the game for Larry and his family. That was our main goal. We wanted to win it for us as well, but for them first."
Utah played its first game since Miller passed away at home with his family at his side on Friday due to complications of type 2 diabetes at age 64.
"We had a wonderful week before he passed," Miller's wife Gail said. "He did everything he could to stay here, but it wasn't to be. He went peaceful and he was prepared."
Before the game, the Jazz observed a moment of silence, and showed a brief video tribute to the appreciative fans at the sold out Energy Solutions Arena, while shining a light on Miller's empty courtside seat.
In memory of Miller, who owned the Jazz for nearly 25 years, the team wore a patch on their uniforms with the original logo, a purple musical note with original team colours of gold with green trim and the initials "LHM" at the top in white.
After the victory, Williams walked over and gave the game ball to Miller's widow, and gave her a big hug.
"It was an emotional night for everybody involved in the Jazz organization," Williams added. "It was a sad two days since we heard about his passing. He was so loved in the Salt Lake community. He was a great guy and we'll all miss him."
Ronnie Brewer added 16 points while Paul Millshap accumulated 12 and 10 rebounds for Utah (33-23) which won for the seventh time in the last eight games.
Chris Paul had 24 points with seven assists for travel-weary New Orleans (32-22) which lost a 115-111 overtime decision to the league- best Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night. Rasual Butler scored 21 while David west finished with 18 and 10 boards.
"The crowd and the players really wanted the game," Paul said. "We just wanted to steal one, but unfortunately we came up short."
The Jazz led by as many as 15 early in the game, but watched it dip to two late in the third quarter before carrying an 84-76 advantage in the final frame.
Ahead 86-80, Williams and Okur took over the offence, while the defence stiffened, allowing the Hornets just one field goal in the first nine minutes
Williams hit a jumper and three-pointer, and when Okur made a driving layup and triple of his own, the Jazz had a 96-81 cushion with 6:38 remaining.
The Hornets pulled to within 10, but Okur had another basket, Andrei Kirilenko blocked Paul's drive and Millshap made two free throws to seal the heartfelt victory.
