Hamas gives no details on response to Egypt peace plan

Hamas gives no details on response to Egypt peace plan Cairo  - The Palestinian group Hamas on Wednesday refused to go into details of the group's reply to the Egyptian proposal until Cairo discusses them with Israel.

Hamas official Salah al-Bardawil told a press conference in Cairo that the group only gave Egyptian officials their "interpretations and vision for the main points of the Egyptian proposal".

"We are not in a position to amend the Egyptian proposal. The proposal consists of main headlines and each side presents his own vision under them," al- Bardawil said.

"The movement has presented a detailed vision to the Egyptian leadership. A vision which serves Palestinians demands and needs," he added.

Egypt last week announced a proposal for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and all Palestinian factions so that aid could reach civilians, easing the blockade of Gaza, and tightening security to prevent weapons-smuggling into the Gaza Strip, which is controlled by the Islamic militant group Hamas.

"The Egyptian proposal is the only one we got and we hope after discussion, it will end successfully," al-Bardawil told the brief press conference in the Egyptian capital.

Earlier on Wednesday, senior Hamas officials told the Palestinian news agency Ramattan in Gaza that they would accept Cairo's proposal.

Al-Bardawil said that the Islamist group deals with the Egyptian side as the mediator, who presented the proposal and would be responsible for its implementation.

"There is no disagreement with the Egyptian leadership. The issue is differences over how to deal with the Zionist enemy through the details of this initiative," said al-Bardawil.

"But the Israeli side is the enemy and we will not accept less than withdrawal, lifting the siege permanently and opening the crossings," he said.

Over 1,010 people have died in the densely populated enclave during the 19-day offensive by Israel. As fighting on the ground continues, some 4,500 people have been injured. (dpa)
