Google develops Health-Tracking Wristband

Google is now working on a health tracker, a type of wearable gadget. It has developed a wristwatch-like device that can track things like pulse, activity level, heart rate and skin temperature. The new tracker is intended for medical use.

Andy Conrad, head of the life sciences team at Google, said, “Doctors have always looked for new ways to gain insight into the subtle biological patterns that could help earlier diagnosis or intervention in disease”.

Conrad said that they are expecting that the new device can help people to make it easier to understand medical-grade information and manage serious health conditions. In addition, the device can also detect surrounding light and sound conditions.

Conrad said that the device has been designed to be a medical one. The device will undergo testing this summer, as the main goal is to get regulatory clearance in Europe and the US. Last year, Conrad talked about his dream of making the Star Trek Tricorder.

The device is not targeted towards consumers, but Conrad said that it resembles to the Apple Watch. The data gathered from the device will help know more about patient behavior outside the hospital and also, help better treat the problems.

Google’s life sciences group has developed the wristband. Google is now working with several research partners on medical studies to know whether constant stream of data can help doctors in their treatments. Google’s other projects include a contact lens that can monitor person’s blood sugar levels.
